Purpose Behind Fearful Doors
Scripture Reading: John 20: 19- 23
The story begins on the evening of the resurrection. The disciples are hiding behind locked doors, overwhelmed by fear of the Jewish leaders and unsure of what the future holds. Into that fear‑filled space, Jesus suddenly appears—not by force, not by breaking the door down, but simply standing among them. His first words are powerful: “Peace be with you.”
This peace isn’t a greeting—it’s a gift. It’s the peace that calms fear, steadies the heart, and reminds us that Jesus is present even when we feel trapped or uncertain.
Then Jesus shows them His hands and His side. The wounds are still there—marks of love, sacrifice, and victory. When the disciples see Him, their fear turns to joy. The presence of the risen Christ transforms the atmosphere.
Jesus repeats His words of peace, but this time it’s peace with a purpose:
“As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
The same mission that brought Jesus into the world—revealing God’s love, healing the broken, proclaiming forgiveness—is now handed to His followers.
To empower them, Jesus breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
This breath echoes the creation story—God breathing life into humanity—and signals a new creation beginning through the Spirit.
Finally, Jesus entrusts them with the ministry of forgiveness. The church becomes the community that carries God’s message of reconciliation into the world.
This passage reminds us that Jesus still enters our locked rooms, still speaks peace, still reveals Himself, still sends us, and still empowers us with His Spirit.
